GOLDSBORO, NC - District Court judge Ericka James has filed as a candidate for Superior Court judge in the judicial district which includes all of Wayne County.
James has spent most of the last 10 years as a District Court judge serving an area of Wayne, Lenoir and Greene counties.
“It’s been an honor to serve the residents of Wayne County as a District Court judge over the last decade,” James said. “Our local courts are critical to building and maintaining safe communities where everyone receives equal justice under the law. I’ve prided myself on building a reputation as a 'no-nonsense judge' who treats everyone with respect, who listens to all sides and who strictly follows the law.”
James stepped down from the District Court bench in 2021 to focus on family and other priorities after her husband was diagnosed with cancer. She returned to serve as an emergency District Court judge after his health improved.
“Serious illness will teach you to value the time, people and opportunities in front of you,” James said. “A judge should always know that inside the stack of cases in front of them, there are real people, with real problems who seek real justice. They deserve a judge who listens and follows the law.”
In North Carolina, candidates for judge appear on the ballot with party identification. James has filed for office as a Democrat, but said she remains “focused on the law, not politics; focused on people, not party.”
“It’s critical that people who walk through the courthouse door maintain a faith that judges are fair without bending to political bias,” James said. “The law should apply equally to everyone — no exceptions.”
James was elected to the District Court bench in 2012 and reelected in 2016 and again in 2020. James is the first African-American woman to serve as a District Court judge in Wayne County.
James graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University in 1995 and earned a law degree from Regent University School of Law in 2002. Ericka and Ronald James have three children and four grandchildren. She is a past president of the Three Eagles Rotary Club in Goldsboro and the family are members of St. Mark Church of Christ, Disciples of Christ, in Goldsboro.
