Friend -
With sorrow but so many inspiringly fond memories, I want to share the sad news of the passing of Ernestine Wooten. Miss Ernestine has been a community builder, role model, advisor and mentor to so many here in Wayne County for decades. She passed on last week at age 98. She led an incredibly full and active life.

Even into her 90s, no one could outdo Miss Ernestine when it came to community service. She had more energy than some women a third of her age. She was active in her church as a deaconess, choir director, event organizer, and fundraiser. She was active in the Alpha Kappa Alpha (AKA) Sorority. Well into her 90s, she even chaired the Wayne County Democratic Party for which she raised money and attracted national leaders.

Miss Ernestine was so well respected by so many, that one of today's leading Republican leaders in Wayne County told me back in 2012 that I needed to chat with Miss Ernestine if I was contemplating a run for District Judge. Miss Ernestine and I became good friends and I went on to win three straight local elections as a judge.

If you live in Wayne County, you don’t have to look far to find someone with a generous story about Ernestine Wooten. Even though she has passed on, Miss Ernestine’s inspiration will always live with so many of us. I will always remember her energy, optimism, and consistent determination to bring people together and move our community forward.
We love you, Miss Ernestine. You will always be with us in Wayne County.
Most Sincerely,
Ericka James
